“NO! NO!”

“Marcus!” Hannah yelled.

I jumped and opened my eyes while panting for air.

“Calm down. Breathe,” Hannah instructed. “Are you okay?”

Shaking my head, I looked around the room trying to figure out what was happening to me.

“I’m okay,” I said.

“You must’ve been having a bad dream. You were screaming that somebody had a gun and to get down. What’s going on?”

“I don’t know, mama.”

She began to cry.

“Please don’t cry.”

“You haven’t called me mama since you were fourteen.”

I had to ask myself, what’s wrong with you? Who is this man lying in the bed he hasn’t slept in since he was a teen? Who was this man living a life that would ultimately end in death or imprisonment? Who am I?

“Time and time again you’ve prayed for me. You’ve loved me from a distance even when I didn’t deserve it. You have been everything a mother should be and I thank you.”

“Marcus,” she cried. “Thank you, and please forgive me for any wrong you think I’ve done or hurt I may have caused you.”

“I forgive you only if you forgive me.”

She nodded in agreement.

I sat up in the bed and at that moment she took me into her arms and held me as tight as she could. It was as if a floodgate was opened. Tears ran down my cheeks and I cried like that fourteen year old boy who longed to be held in the arms of the one person he knew loved him more than life itself. His mother.”
